What Is
Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) causes your throat muscles to relax excessively during sleep, obstructing your airway and temporarily stopping breathing. The disrupted airflow impacts your rest, preventing you from achieving a good night’s sleep and leading to excessive daytime sleepiness and other health issues.

Sleep apnea is not just a nuisance—it’s a barrier to your well-being and health.

How We Manage Sleep Apnea
at Dr. Joe’s

We take a detailed and personalized approach to managing sleep apnea that will look different from person to person.

To begin, we examine your jaw closely to diagnose TMJD, which may include taking a digital X-ray of your teeth and jaw.

One solution is a dental appliance, which Dr. Risa can customize for you. An appliance keeps your airway open so you can sleep more comfortably. The appliance prevents muscle relaxation and airway obstruction by changing your jaw position.

We can help you achieve uninterrupted sleep, significantly improving your overall health and vitality.

What Is TMJD?

Jaw pain can significantly interrupt your life. Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) is a condition that can cause pain in your jaw joint and the muscles that control movement, sometimes leading to clicking sounds, facial discomfort, or limited jaw mobility.

What Are the
Symptoms of TMJD?

Jaw joint disorders can cause a range of mild to severe discomfort. You may experience symptoms on one or both sides of your face.

Symptoms typically associated with TMJD include:

  • Jaw stiffness or locking of the jaw
  • Difficulty biting or chewing
  • Limited jaw movement
  • Headaches or neck aches
  • Ear aches
  • Worn down teeth
  • Malocclusion (bite misalignment)
  • Jaw clicking or popping sounds
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Vertigo

How We Treat TMJ Problems
at Dr. Joe’s

Under the guidance of Dr. Risa, we approach TMJD with personalized treatment plans designed to alleviate your discomfort and restore function.

After a comprehensive assessment to identify the underlying causes of your TMJD—like teeth grinding, a misaligned bite, or jaw injury—we may recommend solutions like a custom-fitted nightguard.

Whenever possible, we prioritize minimally invasive and comfortable treatments to improve your daily life.

Experiencing mild discomfort after overworking your jaw can be normal. However, if discomfort is persistent or worsening, it’s important to have your jaw evaluated by a professional. TMJD can evolve into a serious condition, affecting your ability to eat, open your mouth, or manage severe discomfort.

If your jaw discomfort is a daily problem or you’re avoiding certain foods because of TMJD, let us help you find an effective solution.

Mild TMJ issues can often be successfully managed with noninvasive techniques. However, TMJD can progress and become a chronic problem with severe symptoms, sometimes requiring surgery.

We’re here to help prevent TMJD from getting to that point. And if you’re already dealing with severe jaw discomfort, we’re all in to help you find relief and get your jaw working comfortably again.
