What Is a
Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure where the infected or damaged pulp is removed, and the inside is cleaned and sealed.

The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that helps your tooth grow during development. If this area becomes infected or damaged from decay or trauma, it can cause severe pain and lead to an abscess if left untreated. A root canal can prevent reinfection and relieve pain.

What Do Root Canals Treat?

Root canals are restorative procedures that aim to restore your natural tooth structure. They can be used to treat:

  • Deep decay that can lead to an abscess.
  • Dental trauma, like a cracked or chipped tooth, that exposes the pulp.
  • A loose or lost filling that has allowed bacteria to enter the tooth.
  • Severe gum disease that has damaged the bone and tissues supporting your teeth.
  • Repeated dental procedures, like multiple fillings or crowns on the same tooth, that can irritate the pulp.

Dental Emergencies

Some situations involving tooth pain or damage require immediate attention and qualify as dental emergencies. These include:

  • Severe toothache, especially one that is constant or throbbing
  • Visible pus coming from the tooth or gums
  • Swollen face or jaw
  • Trauma to the tooth that causes bleeding or displacement

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek immediate dental care. Early intervention can help prevent the need for a root canal and avoid more serious complications.

Benefits
of a Root Canal

Root canals are one of the most common dental procedures, and while they might sound daunting, they can make a positive difference in your dental health and offer several benefits.

A root canal allows you to keep your natural tooth, which is always the best option for a healthy smile. We always aim to preserve your natural teeth.

A root canal removes infected pulp and relieves severe toothache—the first step toward restoring your comfort.

It also prevents future problems arising from untreated infections, such as abscesses or the spread of infection to surrounding teeth and tissues or the rest of your body.

Once the infection is removed, the root canal allows the tooth to heal and function normally. A crown is often placed on the tooth to restore its strength and appearance.

Dental Implants

When a root canal cannot save a tooth, dental implants can be an excellent alternative solution to preserving your smile.

Dental implants mimic the function and appearance of natural teeth, providing a strong foundation for restorations if needed. Dental implants allow you to chew and bite properly, which can help improve comfort while eating.

Our team is dedicated to ensuring you understand all your treatment options, and we’ll guide you every step of the way.
